JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest has amended its lawsuit over abortion funding in Alaska to incorporate a challenge to a recently passed state law.
The group earlier this year sued over regulations that would further define what constitutes a “medically necessary” abortion for purposes of receiving Medicaid funding. The case was put on hold pending action by state lawmakers on a bill similar to the regulations. That bill was passed last month and signed into law by Gov. Sean Parnell.
The lawsuit is challenging both the law and regulations as unconstitutional. Supporters of the measures have said the state should not be required to pay for elective abortions.
