MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Meridian Mayor Percy Bland has named a 30-year department veteran as interim police chief.

Bland fired Police Chief James Lee on Tuesday. He named Assistant Chief Buck Roberts to the post while the city searches for a permanent police chief.

Bland declined to discuss the specifics of the decision to fire Lee. Bland says there was a loss of confidence in Lee’s ability to lead the department.

Bland says he wants the new chief to be a person who already has a strong relationship with the police department and the community.
