SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A South Jordan pigeon keeper fighting to maintain his backyard shelter for hundreds of the birds could soon lose the structure under a new judge’s order.

Justice Court Judge Clinton Balmforth gave the city permission Wednesday to remove Boris Majnaric’s pigeons and tear down a loft and gazebo.

City officials declined to comment on how fast they will act.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1kZds19) Majnaric faces related misdemeanor charges in a pending case.

Prosecutors say Majnaric has ignored a city law that blocks more than 40 adult birds at a residence. They say he has harbored up to 300 at once.

Majnaric contends he’s tried unsuccessfully to reduce that number.

He says began raising pigeons after retiring from teaching to fulfill a childhood dream from his native Croatia.
