HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - Two murals being painted on the rear outside wall of a coffeehouse in Hastings are serving as the final for a Hastings College art class.

One mural has a cornfield scene, and the other includes an urban skyline, the Hastings Tribune said (https://bit.ly/11KCE3E ). They grace a wall of the Blue Moon Coffee Co. downtown.

Sophomore Katherine Arias came up with the two designs.

“We wanted it to be more about Hastings and a form of art for the city,” Arias said Tuesday. “So I wanted to show the city life and the really popular farm life here.”

The painting was done in blocks. The mural spaces were already primed, and the designs were drawn in pencil. Each design block contained a number that identified the paint color to be used.

The five other artists working in the warm afternoon sun also are members of Steve Snell’s advanced painting class. He said the murals will take about a week to finish and will replace a test as the class final.

Although the students preferred their chance to complete school work outside, Snell said, developing a mural is more stressful for him than developing a test.

“Because it’s a public work, we want to do our best and have people like it,” Snell said.

The paintings are the first college murals in downtown, and he hopes there will be more from students in his future classes.

In preparing the walls, several people stopped to watch Snell and ask what he was doing. That also happened Tuesday, as the students carefully worked.

“People want to talk and have a conversation when you’re doing a public piece like this, and I forgot about that,” Snell said.
