MOULTON, Ala. (AP) - A former Alabama deputy will avoid jail time after being convicted of using a law enforcement computer system to access information about a romantic rival.
A judge approved a suspended sentence Thursday for former Lawrence County Chief Deputy Harold Knighten of Hatton.
The Decatur Daily (https://bit.ly/RrG9tM ) reports the 44-year-old Knighten was convicted on two misdemeanors of using a police database to access information about a Town Creek man. Knighten suspected the man was having an affair with his wife.
Defense lawyer Billy Underwood argued the conviction was improper and should be dismissed, but the judge refused.
An official says the case means Knighten loses access to the information system. Underwood says Knighten won’t be able to find another job as a police officer because of that.
