WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (AP) - Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a large brush fire in central New Jersey that threatened ammunition storage at a gun range.

The fire broke out late Wednesday afternoon in Woodbridge Township, near the junction of Interstate 287 and the Garden State Parkway.

The Home News Tribune (https://mycj.co/1osZC8b ) reports flames came within 25 feet of an ammo rack at a gun range in the Keasbey section of the township.

The flames also reportedly had spread to several tractor-trailers in a parking lot.

Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen for miles before firefighters gained control and rain helped extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
