MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - Fire has destroyed what authorities say was a closed church in southwestern Indiana.

The fire broke out about 2 a.m. Thursday in a rural area of Posey County a few miles north of Mount Vernon.

Officials tell WFIE-TV (https://bit.ly/1iuw19i ) that they don’t believe anyone was inside the building at the time of the fire. The flames leveled the wood structure, leaving only a pile of burned rubble.

The property owner says the church was traditionally known as Olive Chapel. He says the building dated to 1902 but had been inactive for about six years.

Officials say one firefighter was hit in the head at the scene and was taken to an Evansville hospital to be checked out. A cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined.
