HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A former Madison County Commission employee has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $150,000 in public money.

Prosecutors have said 59-year-old Deborah Kay Sims, the former assistant to commissioner Jerry Craig, had access to a county bank account, credit and debit cards and used the accounts to steal more than $154,000.

A state audit reported tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of undocumented cash withdrawals from an ATM and undocumented withdrawals from an account that was established for the county’s fishing rodeo.

Sims’ attorney, Robert Patterson, says the county’s insurance company reimbursed the stolen money, and Sims will pay $54,000 in restitution before her sentencing June 20.
