DELAND, Fla. (AP) - An elderly central Florida man has been convicted of fatally shooting another man following an argument at a vacant house where authorities say people gathered to drink and do drugs.
A Volusia County jury convicted 71-year-old Freddie Lee McKiver of second-degree murder Thursday. He faces a possible life sentence.
Authorities say McKiver and others were at a since-demolished DeLand home known as the “watering hole” in September 2012 when McKiver grew angry with a man named Marco Carter.
McKiver left but then returned several minutes later with a gun. Authorities say McKiver fired a single shot into group, hitting 50-year-old Michael Logan. The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://goo.gl/BavfJq ) reports that Logan died several hours later at a nearby hospital.
McKiver’s attorney argued the murder weapon was never recovered, and the witnesses against McKiver weren’t reliable.
