FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - A claim has been filed against the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District by the family of a student whom authorities say was sexually abused by a school correspondence teacher.
The family claims the district ignored warning signs by Hutchison High School tutor and correspondence teacher Claude Fowlkes.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (https://bit.ly/1fRJEVd) reports Fowlkes was arrested in March and charged with six counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
Fowlkes denies the charges and says he gave the student gift cards as a reward for good grades.
The family’s attorney, Mike Kramer, says Fowlkes used the gift cards to groom the student. Kramer says there could be other abuse victims.
The school board has scheduled a close-door session to discuss the claim.
