WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The trial of a man charged with driving drunk and striking and dragging a motorcyclist to his death in Milford is getting started.
Nicolas Dutan Guaman faces charges including second-degree murder in Worcester Superior Court on Wednesday. The trial is being heard by a judge with no jury.
Prosecutors allege the 37-year-old Guaman ran a stop sign in August 2011 and struck 23-year-old Matthew Denice’s motorcycle, dragging Denice under his pickup truck for a quarter-mile before stopping.
Authorities say Guaman, who is Ecuadoran, is living in the U.S. illegally. The case sparked a fierce debate over immigration in Massachusetts.
Guaman’s lawyer tells The Milford Daily News (https://bit.ly/1g7XI7K ) he opted for a bench trial because he thinks “a judge could view the case less emotionally.”
