SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Police in coastal Georgia have launched a 24-hour phone line meant to help Spanish-speakers communicate with the department in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police officials say the initiative was launched by the department’s Latino Officer Outreach Program.

Department officials say the program is meant to eliminate communication barriers and to let the local Spanish-speaking community know about some of the department’s lesser-known services.
