LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man suspected of being the driver who killed a Los Angeles policeman and seriously injured another in a crash has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Records indicate that 20-year-old Mynor Varela of Los Angeles was arrested Tuesday and remains jailed without bail.
Police believe that Varela was behind the wheel of an SUV that crashed into a police cruiser shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in the Harbor City area. The patrol car was broadsided as it made a U-turn to follow a speeding car.
The SUV’s driver then ran away.
The crash killed 32-year-old Officer Roberto Sanchez. His partner, Richard Medina, received a broken jaw and other injuries.
Sanchez, a six-year veteran, is the third LAPD officer to die in a car crash in the past two months.
