BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois man who was originally accused with trying to conceal a body during a 2008 homicide is now charged with first-degree murder for his supposed role in the case.
The Belleville News-Democrat (https://bit.ly/Q5QsSY ) reports prosecutors in St. Clair County have filed the upgraded charges against 37-year-old Jason Cowley of Collinsville.
Cowley is accused of assisting 35-year-old Lortez Thomas of Washington Park in the slaying of 47-year-old Eric Mollet of New Baden.
Authorities say Mollet’s body was found in a burned Washington Park home.
Thomas has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for trial May 19.
Online court records do not show the name of Cowley’s attorney.
