ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a French visitor on an American motorcycle tour has died after his Harley hit the trailer of a semi on a New Mexico interstate highway.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Captain Edward Mims says 53-year-old Erick Hamel died Saturday afternoon on Interstate 40 shortly after he and a dozen or so others picked up their motorcycles in Albuquerque.
Mims says the motorcycle’s driver, Hamel’s girlfriend, lost control before striking the semi. He says Hamel was a passenger on the motorcycle.
Authorities say both driver and passenger were wearing helmets but Hamel’s came off in the crash.
There are no pending charges for the driver of the semi, but sheriff’s deputies say the driver may not be aware of the collision.
