DETROIT (AP) - A 19-year-old man died Sunday after being shot during a Cinco de Mayo parade in Detroit, police said.
Detroit police officer Adam Madera said a man was pronounced dead at a hospital after a shooting on Sunday afternoon. Madera says no other injuries have been reported.
A 24-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but Madera had no information about a possible motive. Police haven’t identified the victim.
The annual parade on the city’s southwest side, which had just kicked off, was shut down after the shooting, MLive.com and WXYZ-TV reported.
Belda Garza, one of the parade organizers, said the event was celebrating its 50th year and was to feature nearly 100 entries.
“We are devastated about it,” Garza, co-president of the Mexican Patriotic Committee, told MLive.com. “When something like this happens it’s a tragedy for both people involved and for our community.”
