PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein is slated to speak at a South Portland synagogue on May 15.

Klein will speak at Congregation Bet Ha’am on Westbrook Street in South Portland at 6:30 p.m. Klein, 89, was born in Poland and survived several Nazi concentration camps, including Märzdorf. She later moved to the United States and became a writer and lecturer.

President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.



The program will include a viewing of the Oscar-winning short documentary “One Survivor Remembers.” The film won the 1995 Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject and features Weissmann.

The event is free and open to everyone.
