GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) - A man suspected of smuggling drugs through a checkpoint on Interstate 19 in Green Valley was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says 31-year-old Jose Luis Arambula, of Tucson, failed to yield to a traffic stop Friday and then led agents on a 15-mile chase.
The department says the suspect’s vehicle became stuck on a golf course with three agents on the scene.
Sheriff’s spokesman Tracy Suitt says the suspect then fled on foot, which led to Agent Daniel Marquez firing multiple shots at Arambula.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Suitt says the vehicle contained nearly 500 pounds of marijuana.
The shooting occurred the same day the Border Patrol’s parent agency released a critical report amid complaints about excessive force.
