PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a northern New Jersey police detective shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at another detective.
Passaic County prosecutors tell The Record (https://bit.ly/1oVCDmW) that the shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in Paterson, when officers responded to reports of a man with a gun.
They encountered Etoine Baucum, a 44-year-old city resident, and ordered him to drop the weapon. He refused the directive and instead pointed his gun at a detective.
Another detective then fired his service weapon and struck Baucum, who was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital. Authorities say Baucum’s gun was recovered at the scene.
The incident is under investigation by the county prosecutor’s office, which is standard policy for police-involved shootings.
The names of the detectives were not disclosed.
