BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - A 23-year-old Battle Creek man will spend 37 to 70 years in prison for the beating death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports (https://bcene.ws/1gQ9kC5 ) that DePaul Brown was sentenced Friday in the slaying of Jaleah Boyd.
Brown had earlier pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. He had been in a relationship with the girl’s mother, Kenyora Boyd.
The child’s body was found by her 7-year-old sister last August inside a closet at their mother’s Bedford Township home, southeast of Grand Rapids.
Court documents listed a broken arm and internal bleeding among Jaleah’s injuries.
Police have said Brown took the girl into a bedroom because she was crying. The newspaper reports that Brown told police she fell to the floor after he placed her on a bed.
