MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey who admitted fatally shooting his father while robbing him has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Brendan Matos pleaded guilty in February to the 2011 attack on 56-year-old Nelson Matos. At the time of the younger Matos’s arrest, Morris County prosecutors said he shot his father so he could steal money and credit cards to buy drugs.

Matos allegedly went on a three-day spree of buying drugs and partying at hotels before he was arrested.

Under terms of his sentencing Friday, the 28-year-old Randolph resident will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
