SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Orange County prosecutors say a man whose DNA tied him to the kidnapping and rape of a 19-year-old woman in 2001 has been convicted of sexual assault.

The Orange County Register reports (https://bit.ly/1o5JrgH ) a jury on Thursday found 34-year-old Raul Moreno-Perez guilty of felony counts of kidnapping to commit a sexual offense and forcible oral copulation.

The initial attack happened at a bus stop in Orange in November 2001, but the case went cold.

But when Moreno-Perez was arrested in 2012 for drunken driving he was required to provide a sample of his DNA. It was run through the district attorney’s database and Moreno-Perez was connected to the rape.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18. He faces a maximum sentence of 34 years to life in state prison.
