PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - The owner of dogs involved in the fatal mauling of a woman in Phenix City says the animals had never hurt anyone before and the attack was a “freak incident.”

Steve Klemetti tells The Opelika-Auburn News (https://bit.ly/SjNyeH) that 20-year-old Katie Morrison knelt down to pick up a tennis ball the dogs were playing with, and one of the animals went after the ponytail of the woman’s hair. Klemetti said he thinks one of the dogs mistook the ponytail for its rope toy.

Authorities have said that the two other dogs then joined in the attack.

Klemetti said it was his wife’s decision to have the dogs euthanized due to safety issues and concerns from neighbors.

Phenix City is across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia.
