CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) - Cullman City Schools officials have approved a new random drug testing policy for students involved in extracurricular activities.
The Cullman Times reported Friday (https://bit.ly/1k8U046 ) that officials scrapped a portion of a previous policy that would have applied to students who drive to school, and tweaked punishment guidelines for students involved in extracurricular activities who test positive for illegal drugs.
Officials say a first offense will now result in parents being notified of the failed test, rather than the student being suspended from activities. The student would also be required to perform 25 hours of community service and test negative within 30 days.
Two failed tests will result drug counseling referrals and students being suspended from activities for 14 school days. A third offense will garner a 100 day activity suspension.
