WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say bystanders saved a girl who came close to drowning in a West Des Moines apartment complex pool.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1kbAQta ) that the incident happened around 8:20 p.m. Thursday.

Police estimate the girl was 10 or 11 years old and say she had gone into water too deep for her height.

Witnesses tell police the girl was under water for up to two minutes before bystanders jumped in and pulled her out.

The bystanders administered CPR, because the girl was unresponsive and had begun to turn blue. They were able to get the girl breathing again before emergency responders arrived.

The girl was alert when medics arrived, and she was taken to an area hospital for observation.
