OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - An anti-abortion group that displays graphic signs of aborted fetuses has been focusing its demonstrations outside Omaha-area high schools.
The Abolitionist Society of Omaha has demonstrated outside several high schools this year, including Millard West, Millard North, Bellevue East and Bellevue West High Schools, The Omaha World-Herald reported Friday (https://bit.ly/1mzqB0n ).
Unlike other groups that protest outside abortion clinics, the Abolitionist Society targets schools to get the attention of young people, said group director Tim Locklear. He said high school is a time when students’ views on abortion are being formed.
“We call it Project Frontlines because we believe it is the front lines of the fight. That is where it begins,” Locklear said.
Locklear said the group, which has 15 active members, notifies school officials and police ahead of time.
The reaction to the demonstrations has been mixed, and some angry students and parents have called police about the gatherings, Locklear said.
Millard Public Schools spokeswoman Rebecca Kleeman said the demonstrations haven’t been on school property and that group members are “within their rights.”
Angie Remington, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said her organization is aware of the anti-abortion rights group, but she declined to comment about their tactics.
