AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - An Auburn cardiologist accused of implanting unnecessary heart stents and falsely documenting patients’ medical records has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

Prosecutors said Thursday that 60-year-old John W. Mitchell submitted about $450,000 in false Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance claims for the heart procedures.

A 10-count indictment says Mitchell performed unnecessary cardiac procedures on patients between 2006 and 2012, and altered patient medical records to indicate their arteries were more than 70 percent blocked when they weren’t.

Mitchell refuted the claims in a statement and says he’d never betray his patients’ trust.
