JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Charleston County sheriff’s deputies say five middle school students at James Island were taken to a hospital for a possible drug overdose.

Maj. Eric Watson said the five girls at Fort Johnson Middle School were 13 or 14 years old. Watson said deputies have not determined when and where the girls took the pills or what they were.

Emergency responders were called to the school late Thursday morning for a report of possible overdoses. The students were reported to be in stable condition.

Four were taken by ambulance to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. One was taken to a hospital by a parent.

Principal David Parler said parents were called about the incident.

Sheriff’s deputies are working with the school district to figure out what happened.
