NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old man running from officers in Brooklyn grabbed a loaded gun from his ankle and pointed it at the police, leading one of them to shoot him in the stomach.

The NYPD says the suspect was transported to Kings County Hospital after the shooting late Friday. He was in stable condition with a graze wound to the abdomen. The officers were treated for ringing of the ears.

Police say the suspect, Teddy Spann of Staten Island, was seen by the two officers tugging at his waistband and ran when police approached him.

He was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and menacing a police officer.

Police recovered a loaded .380 caliber firearm from the scene.

It wasn’t clear whether Spann had a lawyer.
