CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (AP) - An air show in suburban St. Louis is drawing a larger crowd than expected.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1odRet2 ) attendance Saturday for the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo in Chesterfield surpassed organizers’ expectations.

The gates opened early Saturday, but the crush of people didn’t start arriving until noon. As a result, traffic was backed up for miles on Highway 40 and the roads leading into the airport.

Mark Sutherland, one of the organizers, says he didn’t have a crowd estimate, but the good weather and news earlier this week that organizers of Fair St. Louis had canceled their air show for the Fourth of July festivities, could have contributed to the large attendance.
