WASHINGTON (AP) - Fire officials in Washington are acknowledging a mistake led a 90-year-old woman to wait more than 30 minutes to be taken to the hospital.

The woman collapsed Tuesday at her southeast Washington home. She became unconscious during the wait for the ambulance and was then transported to a hospital by a fire truck, not an ambulance.

Fire officials say that emergency personnel “mistakenly indicated they were available to respond but were not.”

The incident is just the latest high-profile error for the department, which was criticized earlier this year after a man died after collapsing across the street from a firehouse.
