MERCED, Calif. (AP) - Officials say a fire burned through four Central California homes, leaving 15 people displaced.

Merced County Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Rahn said nobody was hurt in Wednesday’s blaze in Merced, but some of the families’ cats and dogs were killed. Firefighters managed to keep another two nearby homes from being destroyed.

The fire began around 11:30 a.m. behind several homes. Rahn says it’s unclear what sparked it. It was put out about two hours later.

Manuel Rodriguez tells the Merced Sun-Star (https://bit.ly/1mKJten ) the blaze gutted his home, but all eight of his family members were safe. On his way out, Rodriguez grabbed the last pictures taken of his 14-year-old son, Christopher, who was struck by a car and killed four years ago on the highway near the family’s home.
