GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Officials say a large fire at the Grand Forks landfill could smolder for more than a week.

WDAZ-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1jwh0Es ) that the blaze broke out Wednesday night and went more than 10 feet into the ground. Firefighters used dirt to smother the flames.

The Fire Department says small fires happen about once a year at the landfill, but there hasn’t been a blaze like this for nearly 10 years. The cause wasn’t immediately determined.
