PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Lowry Island is closing to the public Monday for the second phase of work on the River Park.
The island will remain closed through mid-December.
Phase II includes a new access road, parking lot, lighting, sidewalks, renovations to the boat ramp, landscaping and green space, handicap accessibility, a bulkhead and a concrete wharf.
The city awarded the $2.8 million construction contract to M & D Construction of Moss Point earlier this month.
Residents and visitors will still have access to the boat ramps on the west side of the island as well as Clark Seafood.
Phase I was the restoration of the pier that burned in 2011.
The overall project cost is $3.6 million.
Future work will include amenities like a boardwalk and additional recreation areas.
