GRAND CANYON, Ariz. (AP) - Grand Canyon National Park officials say they’re letting a lightning-caused wildfire to continue to burn on the north rim but will base their fire-management decisions depending on how the fire behaves.
The 223-acre Galahad Fire started Friday on the Walla Valley Peninsula, which is located west of the north rim village.
Park officials say their objectives include returning fire to the ecosystem in order to maintain forest health. But they say their decision to let the fire burn for now could change to protect sensitive culture resources and wildlife habitat.
The fire is burning in forest and it’s about a mile from an historic cabin on the peninsula.
The Park Service says smoke from the fire is visible north of the park in Fredonia and from the canyon’s south rim.
