PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - An Eagle Butte man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for shooting a police officer during a standoff last fall at a Pierre mobile home.
KCCR radio reports Jason Garreau received the maximum sentence Wednesday. He had pleaded guilty in state court last month to one count of attempted first-degree murder.
Authorities during the trial said Garreau held officers at bay for almost nine hours Oct. 31 and injured a city police officer in an exchange of gunfire.
Garreau also has pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from the incident and is to be sentenced Tuesday. Several charges were dismissed, including some related to a shootout in Hyde County in which Garreau’s cousin was killed.
