PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island is getting more than $2.7 million from the federal government to help with the environmental cleanup of several so-called brownfields sites so they can be redeveloped.
The program administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is awarding the money to organizations in Pawtucket, Providence and Westerly.
A brownfield site is property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by the presence or possible presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
The awards were announced Wednesday by the members of the state’s congressional delegation.
The Pawtucket Redevelopment Agency is getting the largest portion, at $700,000. The grant will be used to capitalize a revolving loan fund from which the agency will provide loans and grants to support cleanup activities.
