NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Police say a North Platte man tried to set fire to a house with his girlfriend and a small child inside.

North Platte radio station KELN reports (https://bit.ly/1nuJG8R ) that police were called to the home late Monday afternoon.

Witnesses say James Peterson made threats and held a flame against a doorway and window. Investigator John Deal says there were visible burn marks, but the girlfriend was able to put the fire out.

Police also say Peterson used an aerosol can to spray flames toward the woman and child, but the two were able to escape the flames.

Peterson was arrested at an area homeless shelter and has been charged with arson, assault and child cruelty.

He is being held without bond and could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
