WYANDANCH, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island school district is going meatless on Mondays.
The initiative at the Wyandanch school district is part of an international campaign to encourage less consumption of meat for health and environmental benefits.
Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1nteFSU ) reports that Wyandanch is believed to be the first public school district on Long Island to embrace the initiative.
Wyandanch high school Principal Paul Sibblies says he wants students to make the connection between what they eat and how it impacts learning.
School lunch manager Pamela Usher says the district has a high rate of obesity, diabetes and blood pressure. She says the district is trying to teach students the health benefits of a more plant-based diet.
