ZACHARY, La. (AP) - East Baton Rouge Parish deputies have raided a suspected cockfight, seizing 77 roosters and arresting two men authorities say were running the event.
The Sunday raid was in response to a tip about cockfighting near Georgia-Pacific LLC’s Port Hudson paper mill.
Two Zachary men, 42-year-old Tien Dang and 30-year-old Bao Dang, were booked into parish prison on counts of cruelty to animals with bonds set at $5,000.
The Advocate reports deputies also issued 20 summonses.
Affidavits say that when deputies arrived, people fled into the woods with chickens in hand, leaving money on the ground.
The affidavits say deputies also seized spurs and tackle boxes filled with syringes, chemicals and sandpaper - items commonly used in cockfighting.
