CALIPATRIA, Calif. — Authorities say a brawl involving hundreds of inmates at a California prison injured 13 people before it was quelled.
A state corrections department statement says 290 inmates began brawling at around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Calipatria State Prison in Imperial County.
The violence occurred in the yard of a maximum-security area.
Guards used warning shots, pepper spray and foam-tipped rubber bullets to break up the fight in about 10 minutes. Some homemade stabbing weapons were found.
Thirteen inmates were hurt, including seven who were treated at a hospital but authorities say the injuries weren’t life-threatening.
No prison employees were hurt in the brawl but authorities say two were treated for heat-related problems due to an outside temperature that hit 108 degrees.
There’s no word on what sparked the violence.
