WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A Winston-Salem police officer has shot and killed a suspect wanted in a hit-and-run crash.

Investigators say the crash happened around 8 a.m. Sunday, and Cpl. D.W. Walsh spotted the suspect a short time later.

The suspect began fighting the officer when he tried to arrest him, and the officer fired his weapon.

Authorities say 26-year-old Montez Hambric of Durham died at the hospital. Police say he was driving a stolen car when he crashed and was on probation from a 2009 robbery conviction in Kentucky.

Walsh is a 17-year Winston-Salem Police veteran and has been on the city’s bicycle patrol for two years.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting as is customary in these incidents.
