MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - A police sergeant rushed into a Long Island bay in full uniform and braved frigid waters to rescue a woman from drowning.
Suffolk County police say Sgt. Paul Mercready pulled the woman from Moriches Bay in Mastic Beach around 7:10 p.m., Saturday.
She was suffering from hypothermia. She’s being treated at Stony Brook University Hospital. Mercready did not require treatment.
Police say the woman walked past a group of teenagers fully clothed and entered the bay in an apparent suicide attempt.
Some of teenagers trying swimming to the woman but turned back because the water was too cold and they did not expect to find her.
That’s when they called 911.
Police say Mercready found the woman floating approximately 50 yards in the bay and raced in to save her.
