WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (AP) - Port Authority police say a drunken driver ran over a police officer’s foot while trying to flee.
The Record (https://bit.ly/1r4hFXj) reports that officers approached a car driven by 45-year-old Norberto Cancel of North Bergen because it was blocking traffic at an approach lane to the Lincoln Tunnel in Weehawken. They found Cancel slumped over in the car.
When Cancel awoke and saw the officers, he allegedly put the car in reverse and ran over an officer’s foot. The officer then used his baton to break the car window, and Cancel was soon taken into custody.
Cancel was charged with aggravated assault. It wasn’t known if he had retained an attorney.
The injured officer was treated at a hospital for a bruised foot and cuts on his wrist and finger.
