CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) - Motorized boats are being banned from two Finger Lakes a day after authorities prohibited boating on another lake because of hazardous conditions caused by last week’s flooding.
Local media report that Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says the boating ban goes into effect at 8 a.m. Friday for Canandaigua (kan-un-DAY’-gwuh) and Honeoye (HUHN’-ee-oy) lakes. A 5 mph speed limit had been in effect for both lakes prior to motorized boating being banned.
Motor boats also have been prohibited from operating on Keuka Lake in Yates County, where Sheriff Ron Spike says boaters face dangers from displaced docks and floating trees.
A 5 mph “no wake” rule is in effect on Seneca Lake.
Water levels on the lakes are high after several inches of rain fell on the region during severe thunderstorms last week.
