LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Attorney Discipline Board has cleared a lawyer who was accused of lying under oath about the role of Meijer in a 2007 recall election of township officials in Grand Traverse County.
MLive.com and the Traverse City Record-Eagle report the panel Wednesday issued the ruling for Grand Rapids attorney Timothy Stoepker.
Donald Campbell, Stoepker’s attorney, says the decision vindicates his client.
The Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission, a watchdog agency, said last year that Stoepker wasn’t truthful when asked during a deposition about his knowledge of Meijer’s political activities in Acme Township, where the retailer was pursuing a store.
Stoepker represented Meijer during a dispute over the proposed Acme store. Voters rejected the store in 2005, and township officials were targeted for recall two years later.
