New police chief in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The Greenwood City Council has approved the hiring of Ray Moore as police chief.

The council voted 5-2 Tuesday for Moore’s hiring.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1qXEzQf ) Moore has worked for the department for 17 years and has served as acting chief since late January.

Henry Purnell retired from the chief’s job in September 2013. Since that time, the department has operated under Johnny Langdon and then Moore, both serving as acting chiefs.

Mayor Carolyn McAdams nominated Moore for the job.

Moore has 26 years in law enforcement, including time as an investigator with the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department.

As chief, Moore will supervise the department’s 56 full-time officers and 20 reserve officers.

His salary, which will be determined by the mayor, will be between $54,000 and $56,000 per year.
