BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An East Baton Rouge grand jury has indicted a 21-year-old Baton Rouge man in the fatal July 31 shooting of a man during what police deemed a drug deal that turned deadly.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1gmKwBj ) Ameer Laymon was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in the killing of 23-year-old Gregory Short, also of Baton Rouge.

Prosecutors say Laymon is accused of arranging and being present for the marijuana transaction that led to the slaying of Short.

Laymon faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

The case has been assigned to state District Judge Trudy White.

It was unclear whether Laymon has an attorney.
