ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A Clarke County woman has been convicted in the stabbing death of her newborn son.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1k8AiEN ) 23-year-old Cassandra Elyse Norwood was convicted of malice murder and other charges Wednesday and is scheduled to be sentenced next week.

Authorities have said Norwood hid her pregnancy from relatives and killed the baby boy by stabbing him and slitting his throat shortly after giving birth at home.

Authorities say Norwood hid the baby’s body and told investigators she accidentally stabbed the baby while trying to cut the umbilical cord. One of Norwood’s sisters found the boy’s body while Elyse Norwood and her parents were at a local hospital.
