SHELBY, N.C. (AP) - A former teacher’s assistant in Cleveland County has been arrested and accused of hitting a special needs student with a wooden spoon.

Forty-one-year-old Aleksandra Hoyle of Cherryville was charged Wednesday with assault on a handicapped child. The charge is a misdemeanor. It was not clear if Hoyle has an attorney.

Lt. Rick Stafford says the incident happened March 24 at North Shelby School.

School records show Hoyle resigned last month.
